Vancouver Airport Marriott Panoramic View of Richmond and Coast Mountains

Executive Summary & Field Verdict

When traveling to British Columbia for major infrastructure engagements, having a dependable staging base right next to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is essential. In late 2021, my colleague Jim and I deployed to the interior for a two-week healthcare RTLS engineering project in Kamloops. Because regional turboprops connect through Vancouver, we bookended our deployment with two separate overnight stays at the Vancouver Airport Marriott Hotel on Elmbridge Way in Richmond.

The first stay occurred on November 29-30, 2021, as we arrived in BC to prepare our gear and catch morning turboprop flights over the snowy Coast Mountains into Kamloops. The second stay occurred on December 12-13, 2021, when we returned from Kamloops before boarding our long-haul red-eye flights back east.

On both stays, the property proved why it remains one of the highest-rated airport hotels in Canada. The front desk upgraded us to the 16th floor (the top executive floor), first into Room 1609 and then into Room 1619, a One-Bedroom Executive Balcony Suite. Pair that with outstanding dining at 75 West Coast Grill, fast airport shuttles, and panoramic morning views of snow-covered mountain ridges, and this hotel sets a high standard for airport hospitality.

Leg 1: Outbound Transit & Room 1609

Arriving late evening on November 29 after transcontinental flights, the shuttle from YVR took barely six minutes. Check-in was efficient, and the front desk assigned me Room 1609 on the 16th floor.

Room 1609 Door Plaque 16th Floor

The top floor features tall ceilings and quiet corridors. Entering Room 1609, the suite opens into a sleek foyer with gray-and-cream striated carpeting, open-concept wardrobe cabinetry, and an immediate line of sight to the exterior balcony.

The bathroom layout in Room 1609 set the tone for the property’s modern renovation. Instead of outdated shower curtains or tub inserts, the room featured an expansive walk-in glass shower enclosure with polished chrome fixtures, dual shower heads (a wide rainfall head plus a flexible handheld wand), and clean hexagonal porcelain tile flooring.

The bathroom vanity features a deep rectangular basin, single-handle faucet, and a large backlit perimeter LED mirror with integrated demister bench. Amenities were Marriott’s signature ThisWorks line, arranged on polished chrome glass shelving.

In the living area, the hospitality console included an in-room Nespresso capsule machine with a dedicated four-pod presentation caddy, accompanied by paper takeaway cups, creamers, and sweeteners.

Stepping out onto Room 1609’s private balcony at midnight, the quiet chill of late November air swept across Richmond. Looking west toward the airport runways, the night city grid glowed under overcast coastal skies.

At 6:30 AM the next morning, Jim and I grabbed our gear, checked out, and headed back to YVR to board our turboprop into Kamloops.

Leg 2: Return Transit & Room 1619 One-Bedroom Suite

After two solid weeks of intensive healthcare infrastructure deployment at Delta Hotels Kamloops, Jim and I flew the turboprop back over the mountains into Vancouver on December 12. Returning to the Vancouver Airport Marriott felt like coming back to familiar ground.

This time, the front desk team handed me the key to Room 1619, a top-floor One-Bedroom Executive Balcony Suite.

On-Site Dining: 75 West Coast Grill

Rather than venturing out in the December drizzle after our flights, we settled in for dinner at the hotel’s signature restaurant, 75 West Coast Grill (7571 Westminster Hwy).

The dining room has an open, welcoming Pacific Northwest vibe, anchored by large hand-lettered chalkboard murals celebrating honest food philosophy.

Dinner Service

For dinner on December 12, we started with Maker’s Mark Old Fashioneds and crispy chicken wings, paired with local Britannia Brewing Deckhand draught beer and a hearty homestyle meatloaf. The food was hot, well-seasoned, and hit the spot after two weeks on the road.

Breakfast Service

The next morning, I returned to 75 West Coast Grill for breakfast using the Bonvoy Elite breakfast benefit. I ordered the All-Canadian Breakfast: fluffy scrambled eggs, a tall mound of crispy shredded hashbrowns topped with chopped green scallions, thick-cut Canadian bacon, toasted white bread, and a full pot of hot Tazo Earl Grey tea with fresh apple juice.

The kitchen executed the breakfast flawlessly: hot plates, crisp bacon, properly steeped loose tea, and attentive service from our server Tomomi.

The 16th Floor Balcony Experience & Mountain Vistas

One of the standout attributes of Vancouver Airport Marriott is that its top-floor rooms feature genuine walk-out balconies.

Room 1619 Curved Balcony Looking over Richmond at Night

At night, the curved concrete terrace gives you a front-row seat to the illuminated city core of Richmond and incoming air traffic on final approach into YVR.

By 10:50 AM the following morning, winter clouds lifted across the Fraser River delta. Stepping onto the balcony revealed a breathtaking panoramic landscape: the neighboring Hilton tower, the broad thoroughfare of Westminster Highway, Richmond Centre, and in the distance, the snow-covered peaks of Vancouver’s North Shore Mountains.

Standing on that balcony looking across British Columbia before heading to the airport for the long red-eye flight home was one of the visual highlights of the entire two-week deployment.

Field Notes & Practical Takeaways

  1. Top-Floor Suite Value: If you hold Bonvoy Platinum, Titanium, or Ambassador Elite status, actively request a 16th floor balcony room. The outdoor terrace and mountain scenery make a routine airport layover feel like a destination stay.
  2. Dining Quality: 75 West Coast Grill is far better than standard airport hotel food. The kitchen takes pride in scratch cooking, local BC craft beers, and proper breakfast presentation.
  3. Airport Transit Ease: The hotel shuttle departs on a regular 20-to-30 minute cadence and reaches YVR in under 10 minutes. If you have extra time, the Richmond-Brighouse Canada Line station is a 10-minute walk, putting downtown Vancouver within a 25-minute train ride.
  4. Summary Verdict: With a 9.3 out of 10 field score, Vancouver Airport Marriott is easily one of my favorite airport properties anywhere in North America. Efficient logistics, spacious renovated suites, and genuine hospitality make it a property I gladly return to again and again.
