Back at Royal Palm: Our 6th Stay in South Beach

The Royal Palm South Beach Miami, a Tribute Portfolio Resort has occupied a special place in our travel ledger for years. This August 2026 visit marked our 6th lifetime stay at the property—following previous visits in February 2020, February 2021, March 2021, December 2022, and June 2024. More importantly, we checked in right as the property was reopening its doors post-comprehensive property-wide renovation.

Having known every square foot of the pre-renovation footprint, this stay provided an exceptional, unfiltered baseline comparison. The hotel has transitioned from its original, vintage Art Deco hotel persona into a sleek, contemporary “South Beach chic” aesthetic. While some of the eccentric, old-world historical quirks were smoothed out in favor of clean lines and modern luxury finishes, the designers made one crucial, brilliant decision: they preserved the iconic historic terrazzo floor with its inlaid Compass Rose star and the beloved Compass Rose lobby bar.

This was also our very first stay booked into a direct Oceanfront King Room with Balcony (Room 1247) on the 12th floor. The result was an unobstructed, cinematic panorama spanning from the resort’s twin pools and palm canopies all the way across the turquoise Atlantic horizon.

Room 1247: Oceanfront Views from the 12th Floor

Stepping out of the 12th-floor elevator bank through the refreshed corridors (featuring rich geometric runners and modern sconce lighting) leads to Room 1247, marked by a classic coral keystone door plaque.

Room 1247 Coral Keystone Plaque

The immediate visual impact upon entry is the sheer light flooding through the sliding glass balcony doors. The direct east-facing vantage point delivers one of the most commanding ocean vistas in South Beach:

Panoramic Balcony View from Room 1247

From the private 12th-floor balcony, you look directly down over the resort’s dual swimming pools, manicured palm trees, private daybeds, the Miami Beach beach walk, and out onto the open ocean where cruise ships and catamarans navigate the coast.

Sleep Comfort, Bedding & Bathroom Renovation

The sleep experience in Room 1247 is distinctly luxurious. The mattress, pillows, and high-thread-count crisp white linens delivered flawless comfort and great sleep throughout the 6-night stay.

The bathroom underwent a complete modernization:

  • Floating Dual-Drawer Vanity: Polished white marble counter, contemporary chrome Kohler fixtures, and a recessed lower open shelf outfitted with warm amber LED night lighting.
  • Plush Waffle Towels: Heavyweight, ultra-soft white waffle-weave bath sheets and hand towels displayed in the illuminated vanity niche.
  • Walk-In Glass Rain Shower: Frameless glass slider, oversized overhead rainfall showerhead, and a secondary high-pressure handheld wand with polished subway tiles and mosaic stone flooring.

Upon arrival, the property recognized our Ambassador Elite status with a handcrafted welcome presentation on the dining table: artisanal vanilla, chocolate, and raspberry macarons, gourmet chocolate truffles, and a fresh purple orchid alongside a personalized management note.

Road Warrior Room Setup & Balcony Living

Spending over 100 nights a year on the road, you learn to adapt when room setups aren’t quite right. During our stay, we ran into two post-renovation quirks in Room 1247 and sorted them out in minutes with what we had on hand.

Room 1247 Desk and HVAC Soffit Placement

1. The HVAC Direct Airflow Defect & Snack-Box Field Solution

The primary engineering flaw in Room 1247’s layout is the location and directional angling of the ceiling HVAC supply register:

  • The Problem: The supply vent is cut into the drywall soffit directly above the work desk and mini-fridge cabinet. Because of its angle and proximity, the high-velocity discharge blows directly onto the bed, blasting cold air right onto the sleeper on the desk side. Left uncorrected, sleeping in that path triggers drafts and dry throat.
  • The Road Warrior Hack: We deployed two essential items from our road warrior travel kit: a roll of blue painter’s tape and the cardboard packaging from a snack popcorn multipack. By trimming and taping the cardboard over the lower downward-angled louvers, we fabricated an aerodynamic deflector that forced the cold airflow upward and across the ceiling plane rather than directly down onto the bed.
  • The Result: Perfect, draft-free, silent 64°F temperature maintenance throughout the entire week. We shared this detailed feedback with the front desk and operations team at checkout so the contractor could re-angle the diffuser grilles for future guests.

2. Workstation Power Receptacle Routing

The renovated desk features attractive reeded rattan paneling and a rounded stone surface, but lacks integrated desktop AC outlets or USB-C ports:

  • The Solution: Rather than stretching cables across the open walkway, we gently pulled the adjacent white mini-fridge cabinet unit forward several inches from the wall, granting clean access to the recessed duplex wall outlet behind it. We plugged in our multi-plug travel surge protector and ran power directly up to our laptops and charging stations with zero trip hazard.

Art Deco Architecture & The Grand Mezzanine

While guest rooms received a modern South Beach chic aesthetic, the public spaces successfully celebrate the building’s historical Art Deco pedigree.

Iconic Terrazzo Compass Rose Floor Inlay

The historic ground-level lobby floor preserves its inlaid Venetian terrazzo Compass Rose, complete with the original brass compass coordinates and lettering. Just adjacent sits the preserved Compass Rose lobby bar, retaining its classic warm under-counter luminescence and vintage crystal fixture.

The Preserved Compass Rose Lobby Bar

The lobby provides quiet conversational nooks featuring curved chartreuse velvet banquettes, low-profile oak coffee tables, and contemporary wall murals overlooking the lobby.

Mezzanine Chartreuse Velvet Banquettes

Soaring beyond the lobby is the newly unveiled two-story mezzanine atrium. Outfitted with aggregate terrazzo tiles, fluted architectural columns with brushed brass plinths, and cascading sculptural white pendant lighting, it creates an airy, elegant arrival experience.

Food & Cocktails: Mixed Company & The Paloma Club

The renovation brought a total overhaul to the food and beverage program, replacing the former Florida Cookery with distinct contemporary venues.

Mixed Company Textured Art Deco Menu Cover

1. Mixed Company (Lobby Bar & Restaurant)

Anchoring the main floor at 1545 Collins Ave, Mixed Company functions as the social heartbeat of the property. The aesthetic is warm and inviting, complete with custom cognac saddle-leather coasters stamped with the playful motto: “How come we haven’t met before?”.

Mixed Company Stitched Leather Coaster

The dinner and cocktail menu is categorized into distinct sensory chapters: Bright & Refreshing, Spirit Forward, Tropical Escapism, Light & Effervescent, Free Spirited, Dips, Raw, Crispy, and Grilled.

Wagyu Sliders, Chicken Satay, and Cocktails at Mixed Company

Dinner & Drinks at Mixed Company (August 18, 2026)

We had dinner and drinks at the bar one evening:

  • Wagyu Sliders ($22.00): Trio of perfectly seared Wagyu patties on toasted brioche buns with melted aged white cheddar, house pickles, and wild baby arugula.
  • Curried Chicken Satay ($19.00): Grilled chicken skewers glazed in rich peanut curry sauce with toasted sesame seeds and watermelon radish garnish.
  • Grey Goose Cocktails ($32.00 / 2 @ $16.00): Crisp, chilled premium martinis.
  • Modelo Especial ($18.00 / 2 @ $9.00): Cold draft beer served in chilled glassware.
  • Itemized Total: $91.00 food/beverage subtotal + 22% property service charge ($20.02) + $7.77 tax = $118.79. Adding our personal $10.00 bartender tip resulted in $128.79, billed directly to Room 1247.

2. The Paloma Club (Outdoor Poolside Bar)

Out on the pool promenade, the newly debuted The Paloma Club offers open-air beachfront cocktails. The design features vertical yellow-and-white fluted tiles, a honed limestone bar counter, yellow cushioned barstools, and a shaded timber trellis overhead.

Elite Breakfast: How Royal Palm Handles Bonvoy Elites

One of the most consequential operational changes post-renovation is the Marriott Bonvoy Elite Breakfast benefit:

  • The Historical Baseline: On our 5 previous stays, breakfast was hosted as a sprawling buffet on the second-level mezzanine.
  • The Post-Renovation Format: Elite breakfast has moved downstairs into Mixed Company. It is now served à la carte from a focused morning menu.
  • Benefit Coverage: Complimentary breakfast for up to two registered guests daily (Platinum, Titanium, and Ambassador Elite).

Elite Breakfast Presentation at Mixed Company

While the morning menu is smaller than the former buffet, the quality of preparation is noticeably higher:

  • Two Eggs Any Style ($25.00): Freshly cracked, velvety soft-scrambled eggs paired with seasoned breakfast potatoes, grilled sweet peppers, and fire-roasted plum tomatoes.
  • Smoked Bacon ($7.00): Thick-cut, applewood-smoked crispy bacon strips.
  • Artisanal Teas & Coffee: Freshly brewed Rishi artisan whole-leaf tea carafes and Illy drip coffee.
  • Fresh Squeezed Juices ($8.00): Chilled Florida orange juice served in fluted glassware.

Elite Breakfast Receipts & Vouchers

We checked our breakfast receipts each morning to see how the elite vouchers were handled:

Parking Hack: 16th & Collins Garage vs. $50/Day Valet

One of the steepest hidden expenses for travelers staying in South Beach is overnight vehicle parking. The Royal Palm charges $50.00 per night for valet parking plus municipal parking taxes and valet tips, bringing the realistic daily total to ~$65.00/day ($390.00+ for a 6-night stay).

[!TIP] The 16th & Collins Parking Hack:
Literally directly across Collins Avenue from the Royal Palm’s front entrance sits the 16th & Collins Public Surface Parking Lot (City of Miami Beach Lot).

  • Self-Parking Rate: $20.00 / 24-hour maximum (scaled at standard hourly rates).
  • In-and-Out Reality: While the public ticket does not include open in-and-out privileges on a single ticket, you can depart, park for lunch elsewhere, return, and still pay dramatically less than the hotel valet fee.
  • Financial Comparison: Over our 6-night stay, utilizing the 16th & Collins lot cost $120.00 total vs. $390.00+ at the hotel valet—saving $270.00 in cash with zero walking distance penalty.

  • Fire Pit Lounge: At dusk, the terrace lounge lights up with sunken conversational seating surrounding a modern fire pit, illuminated with warm architectural perimeter LED strips.
