Executive Summary & Baltimore Work Week

I’ve been spending a lot of time in Baltimore over the past year for client engineering projects, and I usually stay at the Marriott in Owings Mills. While Owings Mills is a really nice, brand-new property, I had been wanting to explore other options across the greater Baltimore metropolitan area.

I had read good things about the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel in various Bonvoy elite communities, but could rarely find a rate that fit within the corporate project budget. Last week, I finally spotted a favorable Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday night rate and decided to book it.

I asked my wife Maureen if she wanted to join me, and she agreed—so we loaded up our new ‘22 VW Tiguan and headed down for a 3-night work stay.

Check-In, Corridor Scale & Room Ergonomics

I booked a standard King room and was upgraded upon arrival to a King room on the 12th floor—the Club Lounge level.

First operational takeaway: this is a BIG hotel. Plan on doing a LOT of walking if your room assignment is not directly adjacent to the main elevator bank! The corridors seem to stretch on forever.

Our room was spacious, comfortable, and well-appointed, featuring a lovely partial view looking toward the harbor entrance and waterfront greenspace.

Inner Harbor Perspective from 12th-Floor Guest Room Partial view of the Baltimore Inner Harbor and green space from our 12th-floor window.

Renaissance Harborplace King Bed and Living Space Comfortable king bedding with clean headboard lighting and bedside charging.

Work Desk and Media Console Generous executive desk setup, ideal for remote engineering work during the day.

The only noticeable design drawback was clothes storage: drawer space was definitely lacking for two people on a multi-night stay, which felt particularly surprising given how much open, unused floor space existed in the room. Otherwise, the bed was supportive and comfortable, and the room was whisper quiet.

Renaissance Harborplace Bathroom Vanity Modern bathroom vanity with backlit mirror and upscale bath amenities.

Club Lounge Hospitality: Ms. Millie is a Legend

We took full advantage of the 12th-floor Club Lounge for morning breakfast and evening hors d’oeuvres throughout our 3-night stay.

The undisputed highlight of the lounge is Ms. Millie. To put it simply: Ms. Millie is an absolute HOOT and runs a fantastic lounge! Her warmth, sharp humor, and genuine attentiveness made visiting the lounge an absolute pleasure every single morning.

We chose not to eat at the hotel’s internal restaurant; the dinner menu was quite limited, and being directly across from Harborplace and Pratt Street meant there was an endless selection of walkable dining options right outside the lobby doors.

The Highway Breakdown Drama

On Thursday afternoon, we checked out around 3:00 PM, grabbed a quick late lunch, and pointed the Tiguan north on the highway back toward Connecticut.

About 30 miles north of Baltimore, disaster struck: our brand new, 19-day-old car with just 1,086 miles on the clock suffered a catastrophic mechanical breakdown right in the middle of active highway traffic.

That was certainly no fun. The flatbed tow truck driver dispatched to recover the vehicle informed us that company liability regulations strictly prohibited passengers from riding inside the tow truck cab!

We were stranded on the side of the highway for three grueling hours as darkness started to set in, desperately trying to get a rideshare driver willing to pick passengers up off an interstate shoulder. An Uber driver finally accepted our ride, and we instructed him to take us straight back south toward BWI Airport, where we would have immediate access to both hotels and rental car facilities.

That breakdown began our unexpected 5-night BWI adventure across the BWI Marriott and Sheraton BWI!

Ambassador Elite Verdict

  • Location: Unbeatable central Inner Harbor setting, directly across from the promenade.
  • Elite Recognition: Generous upgrade to the 12th-floor Club level with harbor views.
  • Hospitality Standout: Ms. Millie delivers the kind of personal, memorable lounge service that keeps elites loyal to the Marriott portfolio.
  • Recommendation: A top-tier downtown Baltimore choice when rates align with project budgets.
