Awesome views, great service at the Marriott Marquis Chicago.

Back at it for the HIMSS 2023 trade show. This year the massive annual healthcare information and technology conference landed in Chicago at McCormick Place. I had not visited Chicago as an adult, and yeah, I have been an adult by chronological age for quite a while now!

I was able to secure corporate approval to stay at the Marriott Marquis Chicago right on South Prairie Avenue for this event. During peak McCormick Place citywide events, nightly rack rates frequently blow through standard travel limits. Even with an approved discounted corporate/AAA rate, the base room and tax rate for five nights approached $3,100 for a standard king room. Having our operational base directly tethered to the convention center via an enclosed indoor skybridge proved worth every single penny.

1. Check-In & Ambassador Elite Corner Upgrade

Check-in on Saturday afternoon was seamless and efficient. The lobby was humming with arriving convention delegates, but the front desk had five or six agents lined up and working the queue with zero lag.

I had already checked in through the Marriott Bonvoy mobile app earlier that morning while flying in from New York JFK to O’Hare, but as a rule, I always stop at the physical front desk to pick up hard plastic keycards and verify elite credentials.

Room 1936 entrance door plaque and contactless RFID keycard reader Arrival at Room 1936 on the 19th floor, featuring tactile room numbering, Braille, and RFID lock reader.

I did not request any special upgrade at the desk. With HIMSS drawing over 35,000 attendees into the South Loop, high-tier inventory is fiercely contested. Walking off the 19th-floor elevator bank and navigating down the quiet corridor to Room 1936, I was very pleasantly surprised. Opening the door revealed a light-drenched Corner King room wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass.

Room 1936 entryway overview showing wood sliding bathroom door and bedroom layout Entryway perspective into Corner King Room 1936, showcasing the sliding bathroom barn door, full-length dressing mirror, and light-filled living salon beyond.

While the room shares approximately the same footprint as the standard king rooms on this floor per the posted door evacuation diagram, the wrap-around exterior walls and three-directional exposure make it feel twice the size of a standard hotel box.

2. Corner King 1936: Three-Way Panoramic Views

The absolute highlight of Room 1936 is the sweeping, uninterrupted panoramic sightlines. Because the Marriott Marquis anchors the corner of Cermak Road and Prairie Avenue, a 19th-floor corner room commands three distinct vistas:

  1. South & West (Wintrust Arena): Looking directly down through the sheer glass reveals the curved architectural roof of Wintrust Arena, boldly emblazoned with its name and the iconic four-star Chicago municipal flag mural.
  2. East & Northeast (Soldier Field & Lake Michigan): Looking east past the railway tracks opens up a complete stadium vista of Soldier Field, the Burnham Harbor yacht basins, the Adler Planetarium, and the deep blue expanse of Lake Michigan.
  3. North (The Loop Skyline & Willis Tower): Facing north frames the dense skyscraper canyon of the Chicago Loop, with the dark bundled tubes of the Willis Tower rising prominently against the northern sky.

During our five days in residence, we witnessed the full spectrum of spring weather in the Windy City: crystal clear blue skies on April 15, a wild sleeting squall blowing across the lakefront on April 17, and a golden sunset lighting up the downtown glass on April 19.

3. Deployment Engineer Desk & Z-Bone IPTV Hardware Audit

When staging an enterprise exhibition booth like the Sonitor Ultrasound Real-Time Locating System (RTLS) showcase at McCormick Place, a hotel room cannot simply be a place to sleep. It functions as an operational mission control center for remote diagnostics, team coordination, and hardware staging.

The executive desk in Room 1936 provided a wide wooden surface, comfortable ergonomic task chair, clean desktop lighting, and desktop cable pass-through grommets.

As a systems engineer, I always inspect the in-room entertainment and cabling infrastructure to verify network isolation, signal drops, and port availability. Pulling back the credenza drawer reveals a clean commercial telecommunications chase:

The setup features a dedicated Z-Bone IPTV / network gateway box cleanly labeled for Room 1936, feeding the wall-mounted Samsung commercial LED display via direct HDMI and RF coaxial splitters. The installation is tidy, well-grounded, and leaves secondary power receptacles readily accessible for supplemental chargers and testing gear.

4. Bathroom & Grohe Push-Button Thermostatic Shower

The bathroom in Room 1936 reflects modern Marriott design philosophy: sliding barn-door access, clean ceramic tile, floating solid-surface vanity, and an illuminated halo vanity mirror that provides shadow-free task lighting.

Bathroom vanity overview with illuminated mirror and clear glass shower stall Bathroom overview showing floating vanity, vessel sink, integrated LED mirror, and frameless walk-in glass shower stall.

The walk-in glass shower enclosure is particularly well-engineered, utilizing Grohe push-button thermostatic controls:

The Grohe valve allows instant selection between the overhead rainfall showerhead and the handheld wand with a tactile push button, while the rotary thermostatic dial holds water temperature precisely at the selected degree mark without temperature hunting. Wall-mounted bulk dispensers feature the signature This Works (In Transit Balancing shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel) line.

The lounge is physically massive, designed to handle major convention surges without overcrowding. While evening cocktail service was suspended during our stay window, the morning breakfast service was well executed:

  • Scrambled eggs, applewood smoked bacon, and breakfast sausage links
  • Steel-cut oatmeal station with dried cranberries, walnuts, and brown sugar
  • Chilled beverage coolers stocked with bottled water, sodas, and juices
  • Automated Franke commercial espresso and cappuccino machines

24-Hour Fitness Center

The fitness center at the Marriott Marquis Chicago is one of the best large-scale hotel gyms in the Midwest. Spread across a multi-level footprint with floor-to-ceiling glass windows facing the McCormick Place campus, it is outfitted with commercial-grade athletic equipment:

6. McCormick Place Pedway & HIMSS 2023 Logistics

For anyone attending or exhibiting at McCormick Place, the physical connection between the Marriott Marquis and the convention halls is a massive operational advantage.

An attached, fully enclosed pedestrian bridge links the second floor of the hotel directly into McCormick Place West and the McCormick Place South concourse. Over our five-day mission staging and supporting the Sonitor RTLS booth, we never had to put on a winter coat or step out into the rain to commute between our guest room and the show floor.

During post-show evenings, having easy access to Michigan Avenue, the South Loop restaurant scene, and scenic drives up DuSable Lake Shore Drive past the Gold Coast rounded out a demanding yet highly productive trade show mission.
