Ambassador Elite Review: Marriott New York JFK Airport Grand Opening (May 2024)

Maureen and I checked in around 5 PM on May 16, 2024. We booked this room as an overnight stay ahead of our 10-hour flight to Hawaii the next morning to celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary.

We had zero expectation of anything unusual when we pulled up, but as soon as we checked in, the front desk team handed us VIP badges and invited us to attend the official joint Grand Opening Party that evening.

Here is what I posted to Facebook on the morning of May 17, 2024:

“We weren’t expecting to be invited to the hotels Grand Opening Party last night, but we were 😊

The Marriott New York JFK Airport and the Residence Inn by Marriott New York JFK Airport are new hotels that share a common lot. Originally scheduled to open in 2020, the Residence Inn opened in Nov 2023, and the Marriott opening earlier this year.

We stayed at the Residence Inn last December and we stayed at the Marriott last night. I’ve stayed here a couple other times also. These are 2 fantastic hotels really close to JFK.”

And about our departure flight heading west to Hawaii:

“When theres only 1 premium upgrade on a 10 hour flight, you give it to your favorite person in the universe - even if that means being separated for the flight.”

Ambassador Elite Folio and Points Reconciliation

The eligible room spend of $307.98 posted cleanly with the 75% Ambassador Elite bonus multiplier (2,310 points) plus the 1,000 welcome gift points, resulting in a balanced 6,390 Bonvoy points total.

The Dual-Branded JFK Campus

This dual-branded property by Chartwell Hospitality was originally planned to open back in 2020, but the pandemic pushed construction back. The extended-stay Residence Inn side opened first in November 2023, and the full-service Marriott side opened its doors in early 2024.

Having stayed at both properties over the past year, this development gives JFK travelers a massive upgrade. For years, the JFK airport hotel market was dominated by aging properties that felt run-down and neglected. Having a brand new full-service Marriott paired with a Residence Inn right on 135th Avenue gives road warriors and leisure travelers clean, modern rooms, reliable climate control, and solid dining options just five minutes from the terminals.

Grand Opening Gala and Unveiling Celebration

The grand ballroom was packed for the event, bringing together hotel executives, airline station managers from JFK Terminal 1, Terminal 4, and Terminal 8, community leaders, and local partners.

The catering team went all out for this party. The chef carving station was centered around a roasted bone-in tomahawk ribeye steak and herb-crusted racks of lamb, carved fresh to order under warming heat lamps.

Between the speeches, the property raffled off long-haul airline tickets from partners including American Airlines, Air France, and Qatar Airways, and gifted attendees an aviation biography:

Sleep Comfort and Departure Readiness

Even with hundreds of guests celebrating down on the main floor, our room on the upper levels was completely quiet. The soundproofing against JFK jet engine noise and highway traffic is excellent. The HVAC easily held 64°F through the night without cycling surges, which gave us the solid night of sleep we needed before flying all the way to Hawaii the next morning.

The Field Verdict

If you need a reliable, high-end stay before or after a long-haul flight out of JFK, the Marriott New York JFK Airport is now our top recommendation on the airport perimeter. Between the modern build, attentive staff, and strong elite recognition, it is a property we will keep coming back to whenever we fly through New York.
