Ambassador Elite Folio Verdict
"A premier Uptown Charlotte race weekend base for the NASCAR Bank of America ROVAL 400 at Charlotte Motor Speedway: confirmed 5-night Suite Night Award upgrade to a 12th-floor Executive Corner King Suite, rooftop cocktails at Búho Bar, and 2.2 cents per point Bonvoy redemption value."
Charlotte in early October is tough to beat. The humidity breaks, the Carolina sky turns bright blue, and Charlotte Motor Speedway hosts one of the most unpredictable race weekends on the NASCAR calendar: the Bank of America ROVAL 400.
When planning our 5-night race weekend trip, we needed a solid base in Uptown Charlotte. The brand-new JW Marriott Charlotte had just opened down on South College Street, anchoring the luxury end of the center city, while over on West Trade Street sits the Grand Bohemian Hotel Charlotte, Autograph Collection (part of The Kessler Collection). Both properties sit within the same vibrant Uptown core. We pulled the trigger on a 5-night award booking at Grand Bohemian Charlotte, applying five Suite Night Awards (SNAs) from our Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador Elite account.
The upgrade cleared five days prior to arrival into a top-floor Executive Corner King Suite (Room 1231). With cash rates for race weekend suites running well over $660 per night, getting this corner suite for 150,000 Bonvoy points delivered an audited redemption value of 2.2 cents per point.

Getting more than 2 cents per point on domestic hotel redemptions is where the Bonvoy program really shines, especially during major sporting events when cash rates jump significantly.
Suite 1231 Walkthrough: Foyer, Living Room, and In-Room Amenities
Walking through the heavy solid-core entry door into Suite 1231, you step onto dark charcoal slate tile flooring that defines the entry foyer.
Stepping through the private entryway: slate tile underfoot transitioning to rich patterned carpet in the separate living room.
Immediately to the right of the entry sits a dedicated minibar and beverage credenza. The station features a Nespresso coffee brewing system, artisan glassware, and a glass-front beverage cooler built into a custom brass and wood cabinet beneath a vibrant mosaic art panel.
The in-room beverage station: Nespresso pod system, custom drinkware, and an illuminated glass-door mini fridge.
Entering the main living salon, the room opens up with high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows. The decor avoids bland hotel corporate beige, incorporating jewel-tone teal velvet, dark wood credenzas, and custom lighting fixtures.
Living room seating area: tailored sofa with accent pillows, modern metal and glass coffee table, and comfortable teal armchair.
Waiting on the credenza beneath the wall-mounted television was a generous welcome amenity from the guest relations team.
Welcome presentation on the living room console: chilled sparkling wine in an ice bucket alongside an artisan charcuterie board.
The charcuterie board came wrapped with fresh berries, aged cheeses, rustic sourdough slices, and a personalized greeting card.
Personal welcome amenity board: gourmet hard and soft cheeses, fresh blackberries and strawberries, and sliced bakery bread.
Alongside the charcuterie was a chilled bottle of Rock Nest sparkling wine brut, ready to celebrate the start of race weekend.

Master Bedroom, Comfort, and HVAC Performance
The master bedroom is completely separated from the living area by a solid interior privacy door.
Master bedroom layout: plush king mattress, arched tufted teal headboard, modern pendant nightstand lights, and dual exterior windows.
As someone who logs over 100 hotel nights every year, bed ergonomics and room climate control make or break a stay:
- Bedding & Mattress Ergonomics: The king mattress offered balanced support without center sagging. Crisp white linens, a plush down duvet, and firm down pillows provided solid sleep quality throughout all five nights.
- HVAC Bench Test: The digital thermostat in Room 1231 was set to continuous fan mode at our benchmark temperature of 64°F. The compressor ran smoothly with minimal cycling noise, maintaining an even temperature across the large suite footprint.
- Acoustics & Isolation: Being situated on the 12th-floor corner meant zero corridor noise or elevator dinging. Exterior soundproofing handled Uptown street traffic without issue.
- Wi-Fi Connectivity: Wi-Fi speed test was not recorded during this stay; the connection was stable and handled remote work and race streaming reliably.
Tucked beside the corner bedroom window: a tufted emerald green velvet chaise lounge with a round brass drink table.
The master bedroom also includes a separate walk-in closet with built-in luggage racks, wooden hangers, and two thick cotton bathrobes.
Wide view of the king bed dressed with white linens, grey bolster pillow, and warm bedside task lighting.
Spacious walk-in dressing closet with luggage storage, shelving, and hanging space for extended travel wardrobes.
The Master Bathroom: Freestanding Soaking Tub & Slate Walk-In Shower
The master bathroom in Suite 1231 is easily one of the highlights of the suite layout. It is configured as a private spa sanctuary with dark slate floors, white quartz countertops, and separate zones for the vanity, shower, and tub.
Entering the master bathroom corridor: dark slate tile leading toward the illuminated double vanity and deep soaking tub.
The floating quartz double vanity features two undermount porcelain sinks, brushed brass gooseneck faucets, and custom mirrors framed in ornate turquoise and teal moldings with vertical brass wall sconces.
Dual-sink floating vanity with white quartz surfaces, two custom mirrors with baroque teal framing, and under-counter towel storage.
The centerpiece of the bathroom is the deep freestanding oval soaking tub, positioned beside an interior window with adjustable plantation shutters.

Across from the tub, the walk-in shower enclosure is lined floor-to-ceiling in dark veined marble tile, equipped with an oversized ceiling rain showerhead, a wall wand sprayer, and a recessed shower niche stocked with premium bath amenities.
Shower niche detail: luxury bottled shampoo, conditioner, and body wash set into dark veined marble.
Full height walk-in slate shower: heavy chrome fixtures, handheld wand, and powerful water pressure.

Evening Dining & Rooftop Cocktails at Búho Bar
After settling into the suite on Friday evening, we headed up to Búho Bar, the signature rooftop lounge perched on the 16th floor of the hotel.
The covered porte-cochere entrance off West Trade Street: illuminated white pillars, luxury valet staging, and custom red blown-glass chandeliers.
Búho Bar features an indoor-outdoor rooftop terrace overlooking the Charlotte skyline with fire pits, cabanas, and a focused beverage program highlighting craft bourbons and Spanish-inspired shared plates.
Lobby lounge evening ambiance with warm lighting and bold baroque crystal chandelier fixtures.
We grabbed a cozy table at Búho and ordered a drink flight to kick off the weekend:
- Signature Cocktail Flight: Three tasting pours featuring house tequila, gin, and seasonal infusions.
- Woodford Reserve Old Fashioned: Prepared with Woodford Reserve bourbon, aromatic bitters, and a flamed orange peel.
- Spanish Daydream: A refreshing botanical cocktail with citrus notes.
Rooftop drinks at Búho Bar: Woodford Reserve Old Fashioned with dehydrated orange wheel alongside our craft cocktail tasting flight.
The rooftop atmosphere was lively without feeling chaotic, making it a great spot to meet friends, review the weekend race schedule, and take in the cool Carolina evening air.
Charlotte Motor Speedway: NASCAR Bank of America ROVAL 400 Weekend
The main event of our trip was spending the weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, located roughly 25 minutes northeast of Uptown Charlotte via I-85.
The ROVAL is one of the most innovative concepts in modern NASCAR: transforming the traditional 1.5-mile quad-oval into a grueling 2.28-mile, 17-turn road course that snakes through the infield before rejoining the high-banked oval through a tight frontstretch chicane.
Arriving at Charlotte Motor Speedway: checkered pedestrian walkway and American flags leading toward the main speedway grandstands.
We arrived early on Saturday afternoon for the NASCAR Xfinity Series Drive for the Cure 250. The weather was perfect: crisp, partly cloudy, with comfortable autumn temperatures.
The massive panoramic view from the upper grandstands looking across the frontstretch chicane and the twisting infield road course.
Watching race cars navigate the frontstretch chicane is intense. The drivers carry huge speed down the front straightaway before standing on the brakes, slamming over the red and white curbs, and fighting snap oversteer right in front of the start-finish line.
Xfinity Series cars battling three-wide through the frontstretch chicane curbing as tire smoke drifts across the asphalt.
Race cars clipping the rumble strips at high speed on the approach to the final chicane.
To follow the in-race team strategy, we kept our Racing Electronics RE3000 scanner radio plugged in and perched on the grandstand railing, listening directly to spotters and crew chiefs communicating in real time through cautions, pit cycles, and yellow-flag strategy calls.
Our Racing Electronics RE3000 scanner tuned to driver channels, providing instant tactical insight during the race.
Sunday brought clear blue Carolina skies and a packed house for the main event: the Bank of America ROVAL 400 Cup Series elimination race.
Sunday Cup Series race day: the grandstands packed to capacity with race fans on a brilliant autumn afternoon in Concord.
The sight of 40 Cup Series stock cars roaring under the green flag, braking into Turn 1, and funneling into the tight infield road course section is pure sensory overload.
Looking out across the infield: campers, hospitality suites, and the gigantic Speedway TV board keeping fans dialed into every sector split.
Looking down from our upper grandstand vantage point as the Cup field maneuvers through the infield turns.
For our seating, we chose the upper terrace level featuring stadium seats paired with counter-style drink tables. Having a continuous table counter right in front of your seat to hold scanner gear, refreshments, and race programs makes the entire 4-hour race day experience dramatically more comfortable than standard bleachers.
Upper terrace seating with built-in drink counters: the best way to watch a 400-mile road course race with room for scanners and snacks.
Taking in the post-race atmosphere in the terrace seats with cold beverages as the sun started to drop over Concord.
After the checkered flag fell and the burnout smoke cleared, navigating out of Charlotte Motor Speedway back onto I-85 was smooth, getting us back to our suite in Uptown Charlotte in under 35 minutes.
Uptown Charlotte Nightlife & Location Accessibility
Staying in Uptown Charlotte puts everything within walking distance:
- Light Rail & Transit: The Charlotte LYNX Blue Line light rail is just two blocks away, giving you direct access down to South End breweries and dining without needing an Uber or rental car.
- Uptown Dining: Beyond Búho Bar, Trade and Tryon streets offer great steakhouses, casual bistros, and outdoor sports pubs that buzz with race fans throughout October.
- Airport Link: Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is just 7.5 miles away, a quick 15-minute highway run via Route 74 and Billy Graham Parkway.
Trade Street at night on our final evening: Uptown office towers illuminated with purple and teal lights against the clear Carolina sky.
Gene’s Straight-Talking Verdict
This October 2021 race weekend trip to Charlotte hit on all cylinders.
Redeeming 150,000 Marriott Bonvoy points with five confirmed Suite Night Awards to lock down a 12th-floor Executive Corner King Suite worth over $3,300 was one of the smartest uses of Bonvoy points we pulled off all year. Getting 2.2 cents per point during high-demand race weekend dates represents peak loyalty arbitrage.
Between the spacious living room, deep soaking tub, smooth HVAC performance, rooftop bourbon flights at Búho Bar, and two full days of high-octane NASCAR road course racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway, this was a memorable trip. If you are heading to Charlotte for race week, a sports trip, or corporate business, the Uptown luxury cluster delivers genuine comfort and convenience.
