Delta Hotels by Marriott Kamloops Mountain and Valley Vista

Executive Summary & Field Verdict

“Loved the Delta Hotels in Kamloops - was there with a colleague for a few weeks. It was a great hotel, walkable downtown, an excellent stay.”

When long-term client infrastructure projects take you on the road for extended stretches, hotel selection matters ten times more than an ordinary weekend getaway. Between November 30 and December 12, 2021, my colleague Jim and I were deployed to Kamloops, British Columbia for two solid weeks of intensive healthcare technology and RTLS deployment engineering. We made Delta Hotels by Marriott Kamloops at 540 Victoria Street our home base, and it proved to be an outstanding property from check-in to checkout.

Downtown Kamloops is compact, scenic, and remarkably walkable. Having high-caliber local restaurants directly across the street on both sides of the hotel (The Noble Pig and The Underbelly), authentic handmade pasta down the block at Di Muzio, and riverfront trails along the Thompson River made 11-hour working days easy to recharge from. Pair that with panoramic mountain backdrops, fresh powder dusting the surrounding peaks, and one of the finest Saturday hotel brunches in the Pacific Northwest, and Delta Kamloops earned every bit of its 9.4 rating.

That represents an effective return of over 19 Bonvoy points per dollar spent. For an extended technical engagement, this return rate provided tremendous loyalty value alongside high daily utility.

The Kamloops Deployment: Flying Turboprops into British Columbia

Getting into the Thompson-Okanagan region in late November meant connecting through Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and boarding a regional turboprop flight up into the interior mountains.

“Proppin’ it up on our way to Kamloops, British Columbia today.”

Turboprop Departure over Vancouver en route to Kamloops

The flight over British Columbia was stunning. Climbing out of Vancouver, the propeller engine churned against low coastal cloud layers before breaking into brilliant vistas of snow-dusted jagged mountain ridges, deep alpine valleys, and the wide expanse of Kamloops Lake.

Aerial Perspective over Kamloops Lake and Thompson River Valley

Touching down at Kamloops Airport (YKA) is as scenic as regional flying gets. The runway borders the river flats right at the foot of towering bare hillsides. Jim and I grabbed our gear off the tarmac ramp, loaded up our transport, and headed straight downtown to settle in at the Delta.

Walkable Downtown Kamloops & Thompson Riverfront

After dropping our bags in our rooms on November 30, our first order of business was shaking off the flights and getting our biological clocks adjusted to Pacific Time.

“Out for a walk to get on local time”

Kamloops Illuminated Hope Padlock Sculpture at Riverside Park

One of the greatest features of Delta Hotels Kamloops is its downtown location. You are only a few blocks from Riverside Park where the North Thompson and South Thompson Rivers converge. We strolled down to the waterfront promenade just as blue hour set in.

Thompson River at Dusk with Distant Mountain Ridge

The city had illuminated a large ”♥ HOPE” metal sculpture filled with love locks along the shoreline, framed by the old railway bridge spanning the calm dark water. Kamloops clearly takes pride in its pedestrian connectivity, featuring a modern cable-suspension walkway that spans directly over the Canadian Pacific rail tracks to link Victoria Street to Sandman Centre and the waterfront trails.

Ambassador Elite Welcome & The 24/7 Delta Elite Pantry

Upon walking into Room 525, the Delta Kamloops management team delivered one of the warmest Ambassador Elite welcomes I have experienced at a Canadian property.

Waiting on the living room table was a personalized welcome letter from the General Manager, accompanied by a handwritten card, a fine bottle of Okanagan Valley red wine, artisanal chocolate truffles, and a fresh charcuterie board featuring local cured meats, aged cheddar, gherkins, and chilled Eska artesian water.

On the second floor, the hotel maintains the Delta Elite Pantry, an exclusive 24/7 lounge perk accessible by elite room keycard. For two field engineers working long irregular hours, this amenity was a lifesaver. Rather than having to leave the building for late-night hydration or crack-of-dawn breakfast bites, the pantry was continuously stocked with chilled glass-door coolers of fresh juices, milk, hard-boiled eggs, yogurts, granola bars, instant oatmeal, whole fresh fruit, and premium Seattle’s Best coffee.

Across the Street Dining: The Noble Pig, Underbelly & Di Muzio

For business travelers on two-week assignments, hotel restaurant fatigue is a real problem. At Delta Kamloops, the dining situation could not possibly be better. You literally have two of the city top culinary destinations right across the street on opposing sides of the property.

On our first weekend, Jim and I walked out the hotel front doors and crossed over to The Noble Pig Brewhouse:

“We had an excellent dinner tonight at The Noble Pig tonight. Freshly baked pretzels with honey mustard dip, creamy tomatoes soup - bacon wrapped meatloaf for me, and fish n chips for Jim. We’re sure to come back again before we leave”

Dinner Spread at The Noble Pig with Meatloaf and Fish and Chips

The meal was comfort food executed at the highest tier: piping hot scratch tomato soup with thick grilled sourdough toast, tender bacon-wrapped meatloaf served with roasted baby potatoes and broccolini, and Jim crispy golden fish and chips.

A couple of nights later, after a grueling 11-hour day on site, we crossed the street in the other direction to visit its sister spot, The Underbelly by The Noble Pig:

“11 hour working day today. Stopped back at The Underbelly for dinner. They have really good food, right across the street from the hotel - the sister restaurant The Noble Pig is just as delicious and is across the street on the other side of the hotel.”

The Underbelly Dinner Spread with Rigatoni Skillet Potatoes and Old Fashioned

The Underbelly had that exact laid-back gastropub vibe we needed after a long day in hard hats: hearty sautéed pasta with charred crusty bread, a skillet of roasted tater tots drizzled in garlic aioli, a crisp fresh green salad, cold craft beer, and an expertly stirred Old Fashioned.

Then there was the Italian revelation down Victoria Street: Di Muzio Ristorante Italiano.

“Well yeah we are a little disappointed tonight - disappointed in ourselves for waiting a week to get the restaurant. Locals have been telling us to come here and it took us a week to stop in. WOW , what a delicious dinner. Freshly made pasta and gourmet sauces, a proper Caesar salad and yummy gelato. The locals are right and we’ve been told if we want to eat here on Fri or Sat to start lining up at 4:45. They are only open 5-8 Tues - Sat. 5 stars for sure!!”

Di Muzio Italian Dinner with Fresh Ravioli Fettuccine and Garlic Bread

Di Muzio is the kind of local mom-and-pop gem that every traveler dreams of finding. Black-and-white checkered tablecloths, fresh ravioli pillows drowning in decadent tomato-cream blush sauce, handmade fettuccine ribbons tossed in savory herbs, grilled garlic bread, and fresh gelato to close. The advice from Kamloops locals to line up before five o’clock was spot-on.

Casual Evening Wood Fired Pizza and Local Draft Beers

On-Site Dining at Cordo Resto + Bar

While downtown Kamloops offered unbeatable independent dining across Victoria Street, the hotel own on-site culinary venue, Cordo Resto + Bar, held its own. Located just off the main lobby, Cordo features an expansive horseshoe bar, warm timber paneling, and a Pacific Northwest menu that emphasizes regional British Columbia farm-to-table ingredients.

Cordo Resto and Bar Lobby Entrance and Dining Room

After grueling 11-hour days on site when neither Jim nor I felt like braving freezing night temperatures, room service delivery from Cordo hit the spot. A prime rib dinner plate arrived fork-tender, accompanied by roasted baby carrots, broccoli, and rich rosemary pan gravy.

Two Weeks of Infrastructure Engineering & 8 Hours of Shifting Mountain Skies

Our technical deployment involved complex indoor infrastructure and hospital systems integration. Between coordinating pipe runs, emergency backup power checks, and sensor arrays, we also had plenty of fun on site.

Randal The Inflatable Security Mascot on Site

The local engineering crew introduced us to “Randal”, an inflatable security mascot posted up outside clean containment areas. Down in the mechanical levels, we inspected massive multi-tier water heating systems and high-output Cummins diesel generators designed to keep life-safety systems alive during brutal British Columbia winter storms.

Massive Commercial Diesel Emergency Backup Generator

Up on the facility roof deck and helipad, Kamloops put on an absolute weather masterclass. On December 9, we watched eight uninterrupted hours of changing mountain weather:

“8 hours in Kamloops, British Columbia - the change in weather, the view of the mountains, changes in the cloud cover and colors was spectacular today.”

Dawn Alpenglow and Sunrise Cloud Formations over Kamloops Hills

At dawn, soft pink alpenglow painted the high clouds while a crescent moon hung in clear pale blue sky over the ridgeline. By midday, cold squalls pushed through the valley, dusting the peaks of Mount Paul and Mount Peter with brilliant white snow while sunlight broke through in sharp dramatic spotlights across downtown.

Looking down from high elevation over the street grid, the Delta stood right in the center of the action, nestled between the snow-frosted neighborhoods and the winding Thompson River.

Hotel Saturday Brunch & McArthur Island Park

While dining across the street handled our dinners, weekend mornings belonged right inside Delta Hotels Kamloops. The property culinary team puts on a Saturday brunch that easily ranks among the best hotel breakfasts I have experienced in Canada.

“Blueberry Lemon pancakes and bacon for Saturday brunch at the hotel. Our work trip is nearing the end … We will miss this hotel, it’s an outstanding Marriott property.”

Delta Hotels Kamloops Saturday Brunch with Blueberry Lemon Pancakes and Bacon

The presentation was incredible: a towering stack of fluffy Blueberry Lemon pancakes layered with tangy lemon curd, powdered sugar, and warm berry compote, flanked by thick-cut crispy bacon, hot tea brewed in a polished teapot, and eggs Benedict across the table. For a hotel restaurant on a chilly Saturday in December, it was five-star hospitality.

Later that afternoon on December 11, we took a drive over to McArthur Island Park on the north bank of the river for a long brisk walk across the frost-dusted sports grounds.

Following our walk, we stopped into Bright Eye Brewing on Tranquille Road for local craft beers and afternoon snacks:

“Trying some local brew before dinner after our walk around Mcarthur Island Park, Kamloops B.C. The house made smoky ketchup and garlic aioli dip is delicious”

Craft Beer Pours in Branded Glasses at Bright Eye Brewing

Bright Eye had a great modern industrial vibe, featuring a Volkswagen Beetle front end mounted right on the interior dining room wall and a massive geometric ceiling mural. The beer was crisp and refreshing, and the house-made smoky ketchup and garlic aioli served alongside a hot basket of seasoned fries hit the spot.

One-Bedroom King Executive Suite (Room 525) & Spa Bathroom

Two weeks in a single hotel room will expose every flaw in a property layout. Fortunately, the Ambassador Elite upgrade into the One-Bedroom King Executive Suite (Room 525) transformed what could have been a cramped work trip into a highly functional residential outpost.

Executive Suite 525 Private Entryway and Foyer

Spacious Suite Living Room with Blue Sectional Sofa and Workstation

The suite opens through a private foyer into an expansive corner living room anchored by a deep blue L-shaped sectional couch, a polished wooden coffee table, and an executive workstation desk positioned against the wall. A wall-mounted Samsung flat-screen TV greeted me on arrival with personalized digital messaging.

Having a separate enclosed King bedroom made a massive difference for sleep quality and acoustic isolation during a 12-night stay. The King platform bed featured Delta signature plush pillowtop mattress, crisp high-thread-count white cotton linens, integrated reading sconces, and an additional wall-mounted TV.

At night, the executive desk in the living room served as command central for reviewing healthcare engineering schematics, writing daily reports, and syncing telemetry back to the home office. High-speed Wi-Fi, accessible power hubs, and ample desktop surface meant no cable tangles or ergonomic strain.

The Executive Spa Bathroom

The bathroom in Suite 525 was equally impressive. Outfitted in modern stone-finish tiles and bright backlit mirrors, it featured a wide double vanity, a glass-enclosed walk-in shower with high-pressure rainfall fixture, and a deep soaking bathtub.

Returning from freezing sub-zero job sites, soaking in hot water beneath warm recessed ambient lighting was the ultimate way to unwind before crashing for the night.

HVAC Performance & Acoustics

Across our two-week deployment, Kamloops winter temperatures fluctuated between crisp freezing afternoons and sub-zero nights. The in-room digital climate control maintained an exact 64°F target without annoying compressor cycling or fan surges. Sound isolation from the street was excellent despite the central downtown location; dual-pane glazing kept street traffic and Canadian Pacific rail rumblings down to a faint whisper.

Rooftop Heated Pool, Hot Tub & Alpenglow Vistas

One of the standout amenities at Delta Hotels Kamloops is its fourth-floor rooftop outdoor recreation deck. While many northern hotels close their outdoor aquatic facilities during Canadian winters, the Delta keeps both its heated outdoor swimming pool and whirlpool hot tub operating through the snow.

Rooftop Heated Outdoor Swimming Pool on Fourth Floor Terrace

Stepping out onto the rooftop deck into crisp sub-freezing air and sinking into the bubbling 104°F octagonal hot tub was pure luxury. Overhead radiant patio heaters kept the surrounding walkway ice-free and comfortable.

From the rooftop deck and suite windows, winter sunsets over the Thompson River valley put on an unforgettable show, casting brilliant pink and crimson alpenglow across the snow-dusted contours of Mount Peter and Mount Paul.

Two-Week Wrap-Up & Departure Logistics

By December 12, our deployment deliverables were complete, our field systems tested, and our two weeks in the Thompson Valley came to an end.

“Our time in Kamloops is over. It was a really nice place to spend the last 2 weeks. Now let’s hope my COVID test remains negative and I can fly back to the US”

Kamloops Airport Terminal Curbside Taxi Stand on Departure Afternoon

Traveling cross-border during late 2021 required rigorous negative COVID tests within tight departure windows. With tests secured and cleared, we packed up our gear, caught a taxi out to Kamloops Airport under clear blue Canadian skies, and headed back across the border.
