Executive Summary and Field Verdict

When NASCAR announced its historic inaugural street course weekend inside Naval Base Coronado, Maureen and I knew exactly where our base camp had to be: the Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa. Situated on the quiet eastern shoreline of Coronado Island overlooking San Diego Bay, this resort sits directly across the water from downtown San Diego and just a short drive from the gates of the active naval air station.

Coronado Island Marriott Resident Flamingos and Resort Lagoon The famous saltwater lagoon at Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa, home to resident Chilean flamingos and waterfowl, with the San Diego-Coronado Bridge in the background.

Over a six-night stay covering race week, this property delivered an extraordinary dual experience: a tranquil resort retreat complete with bayfront walking trails, swimming pools, and a resident flamingo lagoon, combined with the most surreal motorsports setting we have ever attended. Sitting on our room balcony, we watched massive US Navy warships cruise right past our terrace, while race car haulers crossed the towering arch of the Coronado Bridge above.

Front-Row Navy Warships and Coronado Bridge Views

The location of the Coronado Island Marriott along San Diego Bay provides one of the most dynamic nautical vistas in the United States. Because the resort sits along the main deep-water naval shipping channel connecting San Diego Bay to the Pacific Ocean, active fleet movements take place right outside your window.

USS Makin Island LHD-8 Transiting Past Resort Balcony USS Makin Island (LHD-8), an 844-foot Wasp-class amphibious assault carrier, transiting past our room balcony along San Diego Bay.

USS Cincinnati LCS-20 Littoral Combat Trimaran USS Cincinnati (LCS-20), an Independence-class littoral combat trimaran, cruising out through San Diego Bay.

During our stay, we had front-row seats for multiple naval movements:

  • USS Makin Island (LHD-8): An 844-foot amphibious assault carrier gliding past our terrace with sailors on deck, framed perfectly by the palm trees and the soaring Coronado Bridge.
  • USS Cincinnati (LCS-20): An Independence-class high-speed trimaran warship navigating the channel under armed naval harbor security escort.
  • USNS Fleet Replenishment Vessels: Heavy auxiliary supply ships passing against the glass towers of the downtown San Diego skyline.

NASCAR Cup Team Race Hauler on the Coronado Bridge A NASCAR Cup Series transporter truck crossing the high span of the San Diego-Coronado Bridge heading to the naval base.

Even the highway traffic told the story of race week: looking up toward the high-altitude sweep of the Coronado Bridge, we spotted team transporters and equipment haulers crossing into Coronado to stage on the military flight line.

Balcony Living and Pink Flamingo Traditions

One of our favorite rituals while traveling is unwinding on the room balcony at golden hour.

Balcony Cocktail and Pink Flamingo Rubber Duck Chilled evening craft cocktail and our pink flamingo rubber duck mascot resting on the woven terrace table.

Sunset Balcony Railing Facing San Diego Skyline Sunset cocktail on the balcony railing looking out over San Diego Bay toward the distant downtown towers.

With our lucky pink flamingo rubber duck mascot in tow (a fitting nod to the resort resident flamingo flock), we enjoyed craft cocktails on the terrace watching the sun dip behind the Coronado peninsula.

Poolside Snack Basket with San Pellegrino Poolside snack basket packed with Italian San Pellegrino, Sun Chips, Planters nuts, and fresh snacks.

During afternoon downtime between qualifying sessions, the poolside service kept us refreshed with chilled San Pellegrino limonata, snack baskets, and shaded cabana seating.

Resort Grounds, Bayside Cottage Wings and Wildlife

Unlike high-rise downtown hotels, the Coronado Island Marriott is built as an expansive low-density campus spanning 16 bayfront acres.

Resort Low-Rise Cottage Wings Facing Water The resort two-story cottage wings featuring private balconies and terraces directly overlooking San Diego Bay.

Manicured Tropical Paths and Bougainvillea Lush tropical walkways lined with flowering bougainvillea, bird of paradise, and towering California palm trees.

Bayside Waterfront Promenade Trail The shoreline walking path running directly along the water in front of the resort.

The Resident Chilean Flamingos

The defining ecological feature of the property is its freshwater and saltwater lagoon system. Meandering through the central courtyard between the guest rooms and the bay, the lagoon is home to a permanent flock of Chilean flamingos, exotic waterfowl, and native coastal birds. Watching the flamingos wade through the shallows with the Coronado Bridge towering in the background is a signature resort hallmark that guests of all ages adore.

The Main Event: NASCAR San Diego Weekend at Naval Base Coronado

While the resort offered total serenity, the centerpiece of our trip was the groundbreaking NASCAR San Diego Weekend held inside active Naval Base Coronado (NAS North Island).

Arriving on Naval Base Coronado Tarmac Arriving on the active airfield flight line at Naval Base Coronado, with supercarrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) in the background.

This was not a standard speedway or permanent road course. NASCAR and the United States Navy transformed the active concrete runways, taxiways, and tarmac of the military base into a temporary high-speed street circuit.

Active Airfield Tarmac Converted into Race Circuit The naval flight line transformed into a championship racetrack with concrete safety barriers and spectator grandstands.

Racing in the Shadow of Supercarrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70)

The visual spectacle was unlike anything in motorsports history. Berthed directly against the racetrack fence along the pier was the Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70).

Green Flag and Cup Series Racing Action

From our seats in the grandstands, the roar of V8 engines echoing off carrier hulls and aircraft hangars was electrifying.

We watched Ricky Stenhouse Jr. power his #47 Sycuan Casino Resort machine down the frontstretch, with Hendrick Motorsports pit boxes commanding strategy right in front of us. Concrete barriers and heavy tire walls defined the technical 12-turn airfield layout. Being there in person with Maureen to witness NASCAR history inside an active naval installation was an unforgettable highlight of our 2026 season.

Room Comfort, Bed Quality and HVAC Acoustics

Returning to the resort after full days on the concrete flight line offered a welcome escape:

Bayfront King Room with Terrace Sliding Doors Our Bayfront King Room featuring plush seating, executive desk, and glass doors opening to the bay terrace.

Guest Room Entry Corridor and Wardrobe Room entry corridor with modern wall paneling, pendant lighting, and wardrobe credenza.

  • Bedding and Sleep Comfort: The king mattress and pillow configuration provided restful sleep recovery. Linens were crisp and breathable for Southern California coastal weather.
  • HVAC and Noise Bench: The climate control unit ran with quiet continuous fan circulation, holding our preferred 64 degrees Fahrenheit setpoint easily.
  • Room Acoustics: Because the resort is arranged in two-story villa pods away from street noise, ambient sound was remarkably peaceful. The only sounds from the terrace were soft bay waves and distant marine horns.

Night Skyline and Evening Bay Reflections

When darkness settles over San Diego Bay, the views from the Coronado Island Marriott become truly magical:

Night Skyline of Downtown San Diego and Bridge Reflections The sparkling night skyline of downtown San Diego reflecting across the calm waters of the bay.

Evening Water Reflections and Silhouetted Palm Fronds Tranquil night reflections and silhouetted palms looking out from our room balcony.

The downtown office towers, convention center, and illuminated Coronado Bridge cast long, shimmering reflections across the water, creating a tranquil setting for late-night dispatches.

Ambassador Elite Folio and Points Audit: Critical Discrepancies

We audit every single hotel folio down to the dollar and point to verify that qualifying spend, room rate revenue, incidentals, and elite bonus multipliers are credited accurately by the property PMS into the central Marriott Bonvoy ledger.

This stay revealed substantial systemic posting errors requiring escalation to Marriott Ambassador Elite Member Support:

Points Audit Analysis: Why This Stay Failed PMS Ledger Posting

This six-night stay was split across two consecutive bookings (Booking 1: Jun 17 - Jun 22, 5 nights; Booking 2: Jun 22 - Jun 23, 1 night).

Both bookings suffered from major PMS configuration breakdowns:

  1. Missing Elite Welcome Gift: Neither reservation credited the guaranteed 1,000-point Ambassador Elite Welcome Gift amenity. Under Bonvoy program terms, failing to offer or credit the welcome gift entitles the member to guest compensation.
  2. Grossly Under-Credited Room Rate Revenue: The PMS posted only 6,941 total base points across six nights, representing just $694.10 in total qualifying spend ($115.68/night). At an actual average room rate of $345.00/night, more than $1,300.00 in qualifying room revenue was improperly categorized as non-qualifying and excluded from base points accumulation.
  3. Multiplier Cascade Shortfall: Because base points were under-calculated by ~13,759 points, the 75% Ambassador Elite bonus was similarly suppressed by over 10,000 points.

This file is flagged for manual audit by our assigned Marriott Ambassador service representative for full points correction and ledger balance.

Location, Accessibility and Ferry Pier Logistics

Situated at 2000 Second Street in Coronado, the property enjoys prime strategic advantages:

  • Coronado Ferry Pier: Just a five-minute walk north along the shoreline trail, the Coronado Ferry transports passengers across the bay directly to the San Diego Convention Center and Broadway Pier in under 15 minutes, bypassing bridge vehicle congestion.
  • Naval Base Access: NAS North Island gates are less than a 10-minute drive across 3rd and 4th Streets.
  • Coronado Village & Ocean Beach: Orange Avenue shops, local eateries, and the famous Hotel del Coronado Pacific beachfront are within a 5-minute bike ride or short drive.

The Final Verdict

The Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa provided the ultimate home base for an historic race week. While property accounting must resolve the folio points deficit, the resort unique mix of bayside tranquility, flamingo wildlife, naval fleet vantage points, and front-row access to the NASCAR San Diego street race makes it an unforgettable Southern California destination.
