Field Review: The Dorian, Autograph Collection - Calgary (December 2023)

"One of my favorite hotels anywhere. They got everything right here and it feels like walking into a storybook. I hardly ever buy hotel merch, yet I bought both a copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray and a luxurious purple umbrella right from the property."

Executive Summary & Field Verdict

In mid-December 2023, I spent four nights at The Dorian, Autograph Collection in downtown Calgary. This was a business trip to deliver a technical Proof of Concept, and The Dorian turned out to be one of the absolute best hotel experiences I had all year across more than 120 nights on the road.

As I posted on Facebook right as the trip wrapped up:

“Photo dump of Calgary … The Dorian Hotel was fantastic - want to come back with Maureen just to stay here. Calgary food and hospitality great - let’s hope the Proof of Concept turns into much more :-D”

A few days later, on December 21, I reflected on the entire travel season:

“Well that’s a wrap for 2023 travel. It’s been a lot - 125 in-bed nights at Marriott Hotels in North America. 2 countries, not sure how many states or miles traveled yet. I was lucky enough that Maureen was able to travel with me a lot this year - on work and leisure travel. We have an exciting trip coming up for our 30th/35th anniversary next year, and am counting the days down until we leave. Cheers to all my business traveler friends, I think many of us had more travel this year than expected.”

The Dorian is legitimately one of my favorite hotels anywhere. They got everything right there, and staying here feels like walking into a storybook. Every detail inspired by Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray feels authentic, playful, and thoughtfully put together rather than gimmicky. To put it in perspective: I hardly ever buy hotel merchandise, yet before I checked out of The Dorian, I bought both a copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray from the hotel and a luxurious purple umbrella.

Room Comfort, Bed Quality & Design Details

I was upgraded to a Deluxe King in Room 2504 on the 25th floor. Stepping out of the elevator onto Floor 25 sets the tone immediately: a crisp white-and-black mosaic tiled landing with “25” worked into the floor design in black hexagonal tiles, royal blue wainscoting, and a gallery wall of framed ballroom dancing illustrations.

Inside the room, the attention to detail is remarkable. The centerpiece is the accent wall behind the king bed, covered in rich dark blue William Morris style botanical and bird wallpaper. The bed itself offered first-rate spinal support with crisp luxury linens and plush down pillows.

On the nightstand and pillows, the hotel leans into its literary theme with clever touches. On the pillows sat a printed confession card paired with a real peacock feather, inviting guests to scan a QR code and anonymously share a secret with the hotel.

Bathroom, Fixtures & Water Pressure

The bathroom was spotless, finished with modern marble floor tiles, a wide floating backlit vanity mirror, matte black fixtures, and a spacious glass-enclosed walk-in shower with hexagonal tilework and a rain shower head. Water pressure was strong and temperature response was instant.

Welcome Amenity, Elite Recognition & Gift Haul

The staff at The Dorian took genuine care of me. Waiting in the room was a personalized handwritten card from the guest relations team welcoming me by name, accompanied by a plate with “Welcome to Calgary” scripted in chocolate and four festive holiday cupcakes decorated with candy canes, snowflake chocolate tiles, and chocolate reindeer antlers.

This kind of personal touch is exactly what separates great Autograph Collection properties from standard corporate boxes. When a property takes the time to write a note by hand and prepare fresh pastries, it shows real pride in hospitality.

Maureen did not travel with me on this Calgary work trip, which is why I wrote in my Facebook post that I want to bring her back here just to stay at The Dorian. Before heading home, in addition to buying a copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray and the purple umbrella from the hotel, I picked up a winter knitwear gift set to bring back for Maureen: a soft mauve knit beanie, matching cable-knit mittens with tassels, a warm scarf, and a leather travel case.

The cocktail program here is serious. Their smoked Old Fashioned arrived in cut crystal with thick, fragrant wood smoke trapped right inside the glass over a large clear ice rock with orange peel.

The bar snacks were just as impressive. I ordered artisanal corn dogs and croquette skewers served on vintage newsprint lined paper, paired with toasted baguette crostini topped with melted cheese, whole grain mustard, and pickled shallots.

Each morning, the Ambassador Elite breakfast benefit was redeemed downstairs at Prologue Cafe and Cocktails. The culinary quality was remarkable:

One morning I ordered the brioche French toast, which arrived golden brown and dusted in powdered sugar, topped with macerated wild berries and served with fresh whipped cream, pure Canadian maple syrup, and hot tea.

Views Over Downtown Calgary

Being up on the 25th floor gave me front-row views of the Calgary skyline. By day, the floor-to-ceiling glass looks out over the bustling financial district, with modern glass towers reflecting the bright Alberta sun.

Exploring Calgary and Banff

During this December trip, I had the chance to get out and explore the city. Downtown Calgary is clean, walkable, and connected by the Plus 15 enclosed skywalk network, which makes moving between buildings comfortable even in Canadian winter weather.

Along Stephen Avenue, Calgary’s historic pedestrian concourse, large sculptural white Galleria Trees arch gracefully above the walkway between contemporary skyscrapers and heritage storefronts.

I stopped by The CORE Shopping Centre, which was completely transformed for the holidays with thousands of cascading white fairy lights hanging from the glass atrium ceiling around a multi-story Christmas tree.

I also had the chance to make the drive west toward the Canadian Rockies out to Banff National Park. Driving Trans-Canada Highway 1 with snow-capped mountain peaks rising up in front of the windshield is an experience everyone should have at least once.

Final Takeaway

The Dorian, Autograph Collection is one of my all-time favorite hotels. They got everything right here, and the entire property feels like a storybook come to life. The Oscar Wilde literary theme is executed with real charm, the rooms are quiet and comfortable, the food and bar program punches way above its weight, and the staff treat you with genuine warmth. For someone who almost never buys hotel merch, walking out of the lobby with a hotel copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray and a luxurious purple umbrella says it all.

As I posted on Facebook, this is a place I want to come back to with Maureen just to stay at the hotel itself. If your travels take you to Calgary, put The Dorian at the very top of your list.
