2023 BMW X3 xDrive30i (Dark Graphite Metallic / Cognac Vernasca Leather)

Rating: 9.3 / 10

The quintessential interstate deployment SUV: rock-solid German highway composure from Connecticut down I-95 to Maryland, Cognac Vernasca leather ergonomics, and widescreen iDrive 7 running split-screen Android Auto navigation, with streaming video of the live FS1 NASCAR Bristol Dirt Race broadcast strictly limited to when the vehicle was parked (in-car video playback does not operate while in motion).

Executing high-priority infrastructure and travel deployments across the busy Northeast and Mid-Atlantic corridors demands an automobile that blends vault-like highway isolation, responsive active safety, and an ergonomic mobile command post.

On Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023, our deployment schedule required an immediate sprint from our Connecticut operational base in Southbury down the length of Interstate 95 to the Marriott Owings Mills Metro Centre in Baltimore County, Maryland.

National Car Rental’s Executive Selection delivered the ideal tool for the mission: a 2023 BMW X3 xDrive30i (G01 LCI) clad in Dark Graphite Metallic over rich Cognac Vernasca leather, wearing Maryland registration 1ED7104.

Staging in Southbury: Parked Beside the Thor Outlaw Toy Hauler

Before hitting the highway, we prepped and loaded the BMW X3 in Southbury, Connecticut. Parked along the driveway beside our Thor Outlaw Class A Toy Hauler motorhome and family runabout, the updated G01 LCI styling made an immediate visual statement.

The Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) refresh gave the X3 a more muscular aesthetic: one-piece enlarged kidney grilles with satin aluminum surrounds, slimmer full-LED adaptive headlamps, and sculptural three-dimensional pincer-style LED taillights.

Loading heavy Pelican cases, server hardware, overnight duffels, and travel gear into the rear cargo hold was effortless. The X3 provides 28.7 cubic feet of squared-off trunk volume behind the second row, complete with luggage tie-downs, underfloor storage compartments, and a hands-free power tailgate.

The exterior profile strikes a handsome balance between athletic proportions and high-mileage road utility.

Cockpit Ergonomics: Cognac Vernasca Leather and iDrive 7

Stepping inside the cabin highlighted why BMW continues to lead in executive ergonomics. The seats were trimmed in Cognac Vernasca perforated leather with contrast stitching, featuring power-adjustable side bolsters, thigh extenders, and multi-stage heating.

Unlike newer minimalist cabins that bury critical functions three levels deep inside touch menus, the G01 cockpit retains physical buttons for climate control, audio presets, and drive modes. The thick, leather-wrapped M-style sport steering wheel felt substantial in hand, offering tactile thumb switches for adaptive cruise control and media volume.

BMW X3 Cockpit Running Split-Screen Android Auto and FS1 NASCAR Live Broadcast While Parked Widescreen iDrive 7 display running split-screen Android Auto with Google Maps and the live FS1 NASCAR Bristol Dirt Race broadcast while safely parked: note the digital instrument cluster reads 0 mph in Park (P), as BMW factory safety software prevents video playback while the vehicle is in motion.

Infotainment Architecture & Safety Protocol: Video Restricted to Parked Vehicle

What truly separated this deployment vehicle was its stellar infotainment integration. Connected via wireless Android Auto to BMW’s crisp 10.25-inch high-resolution widescreen display, the system operated in an ultra-wide split-screen configuration:

  • The left side rendered Google Maps dark-mode satellite navigation, calculating live traffic delays, construction detours around Philadelphia, and toll gantry advisories.
  • The right side rendered the live FS1 broadcast stream of the NASCAR Cup Series Food City Dirt Race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Crucially, streaming video on the in-car video display was strictly limited to when the car was safely parked. In-car video does not operate when the vehicle is in motion. As clearly captured in our instrument cluster telemetry (20230409_133913.jpg), the vehicle was stationary at 0 mph with the transmission firmly locked in Park (P).

Once the vehicle was shifted into drive and rolling south down Interstate 95, BMW’s factory safety protocol automatically blanked the video stream while preserving trackside audio commentary through the car’s 12-speaker HiFi sound system. Listening to Mike Joy, Clint Bowyer, and Tony Stewart call the high-banked dirt action under the Bristol floodlights while Google Maps handled navigation made the 315-mile trek breeze past without distraction.

Highway Dynamics: The B48 TwinPower Turbo and xDrive AWD

Under the hood, BMW’s proven 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 (B48) delivers 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, paired to an industry-benchmark ZF 8-speed Steptronic transmission.

Passing tractor-trailers in the driving rain along the Delaware Turnpike was effortless. Step on the throttle at 70 mph, and the transmission drops three gears without hesitation, delivering smooth, linear thrust.

The xDrive rear-biased all-wheel-drive system actively shuffled torque between axles as we encountered standing water and pavement ruts through northern Maryland. The chassis remained planted, quiet, and supremely composed, delivering a solid 29.4 MPG across the highway journey.

Midnight Arrival: Marriott Owings Mills Metro Centre

Pulling into the parking structure of the Marriott Owings Mills Metro Centre just before midnight, the BMW X3 had proven its worth as an elite road warrior machine.

Securing a high-spec German luxury all-wheel-drive SUV at a standard executive car rate represents the pinnacle of National Emerald Club value. When reliability, highway comfort, and cutting-edge tech are non-negotiable for business deployments, the BMW X3 xDrive30i remains hard to beat.
