Executive In-Flight Verdict

Delta Air Lines DL 482 • Boeing 767-300ER (Pratt & Whitney PW4060 • Ship 185 / N185DN)

Rating: 9.1 / 10

The quintessential transcontinental twin-aisle workhorse. Delta's Boeing 767-300ER delivers the coveted 2-3-2 seating geometry—meaning only one middle seat per row across the cabin. Flying Comfort+ across 2,515 miles in 4 hours 51 minutes back to New York with solid laptop tray stability.

Closing out an intense 4-day West Coast deployment, my return leg from Southern California back to the Northeast operated on Delta’s classic widebody transcontinental workhorse: the Boeing 767-300ER from Los Angeles International (LAX) to New York John F. Kennedy (JFK).

While newer narrowbodies like the Airbus A321neo dominate domestic operations, Delta continues to fly widebody Boeing 767s on the marquee LAX-JFK transcon corridor. For those of us working on laptops across time zones, the Boeing 767 features one of the most traveler-friendly cabin cross-sections in commercial aviation.

The 2-3-2 Widebody Advantage: Why Road Warriors Love the 767

Single-aisle narrowbody aircraft (Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 families) feature a 3-3 configuration where one out of every three passengers is trapped in a dreaded middle seat.

The Boeing 767, by contrast, is built on a seven-abreast (2-3-2) layout in Comfort+ and Main Cabin:

  • Window Pairs: Both window sections have just two seats (A-B and F-G). When I book a window seat, I am paired with only one seatmate and have zero risk of a middle-seat squeeze.
  • Twin Aisles: Two wide aisles dramatically reduce passenger boarding congestion and meal service cart bottlenecks.
  • Dedicated Overhead Space: With fewer passengers per row, overhead bin competition in Comfort+ is virtually non-existent.

Boarding & In-Flight Telemetry at LAX

Departing under clear, crisp California sunshine, I boarded Boeing 767-300ER Ship 185 (N185DN). Looking out the window from seat 17A on the left side of the aircraft, the massive high-bypass Pratt & Whitney PW4060 engine cowl framed a busy apron of Delta Air Lines mainline tails lined up at Terminal 2/3 gates.

Workspace & Comfort+ Ergonomics

In Comfort+, seat pitch measures 34 to 35 inches—giving a noticeable 3-to-4 inches of extra knee clearance over standard Main Cabin:

  • Laptop Typing: The seatback fold-down tray table locks rigidly into place. Even with the passenger in front reclining slightly, my 16-inch laptop screen sat comfortably upright without chassis interference.
  • Power Architecture: Dual USB ports and dedicated 110V AC power beneath the center armrest kept my devices charged throughout the cross-country cruise.
  • In-Flight Service: Dedicated Comfort+ snack baskets, complimentary craft beer, wine, and spirits, and attentive flight attendants made the nearly five-hour crossing effortless.
