Most travel bloggers use simplistic calculations that compare cash rate directly against points required—completely ignoring the massive opportunity cost of points you forgo by not paying cash. What is the true benchmark value of a Marriott Bonvoy point?
The baseline target is 0.80¢ per point ($0.008). Dynamic award pricing fluctuates between 0.50¢ (poor value) and 1.60¢+ (exceptional value during peak events, holiday weeks, and high-tax luxury markets). If your Net Redemption Yield is below 0.80¢, you are generally better off paying cash and earning base + elite + credit card points.
What is the "Stay with 5th Night Free" rule?
When you book an award stay of 5 consecutive nights at the same property using Marriott Bonvoy points, the lowest-point night of the five is automatically discounted to 0 points. This gives an automatic ~20% boost to your redemption value on five-night vacations.
Can I stack credit card Elite Night Credits (ENCs)?
Yes, but only across business and consumer cards. You can hold one consumer card (e.g. Amex Bonvoy Brilliant granting 25 ENCs) and one small business card (e.g. Amex Bonvoy Business granting 15 ENCs) for a guaranteed stack of 40 ENCs every January 1st. Multiple consumer cards do not stack ENCs with each other.
What happens if a property denies guaranteed breakfast or lounge access?
Under Section 4.3.c of Marriott Bonvoy Terms, if lounge access is not available (or the lounge is closed without a daily restaurant breakfast alternative) at JW Marriott, Marriott, Renaissance, Sheraton, Delta, or Westin, you are entitled to daily restaurant breakfast for 2 PLUS $100 USD cash compensation if not offered. You must request this compensation before checking out of the property.
